Water agency approves additional lawn removal funding

The Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) recently passed additional funding for residents to replace their lawns with artificial turf. The board of directors approved an additional $1.5 million for the conservation program, on top of the $3.5 million the district already allotted for conservation programs this year.

“Our customers have made a strong commitment to water conservation during this time of statewide drought,” said Heather Engel, director of Communication and Conservation for the district. “This additional funding will help our customers continue these significant and important efforts toward conservation.”

According to the water district, they have approved more than 5 million square feet of turf removal since July 1 of this year.

The demand for turf removal has been a direct response to Governor Jerry Brown’s mandatory water cutbacks. According to research conducted by the CVWD, converting landscaping to turf can save homeowners 70 to 80 percent on their outdoor water usage.
