State Water Project provides small allocation amount

Although El Nino is expected to bring torrential rain to California, the State Water Project (SWP), who supplies 29 public water agencies, will provide agencies with 10 percent of their water needs. That number could vary, depending on the amount of rain and snowpack from El Nino.

The agencies that rely on the State Water Project requested 4,172,786 acre-feet of water for 2016. Based on the SWP allotment, 422,848 acre-feet will be supplied.

Over the last few years, SWP has allocated the following amounts:

  • 2015 – 20 percent
  • 2014 – 5 percent
  • 2013 – 35 percent
  • 2012 – 65 percent
  • 2011 – 80 percent
  • 2010 – 50 percent
  • 2009 – 40 percent
  • 2008 – 35 percent
  • 2007 – 60 percent
  • 2006 – 100 percent

Although the amount seems rather small, each of the water agencies that are a part of the SWP have other sources of water, such as groundwater, streams and rivers.
