Eastern Municipal Water District wins community service award

CVWD receives budget presentation award

Coachella Valley Water District’s (CVWD) announced yesterday that their Operating and Capital Improvement Budget for fiscal year 2021 received a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).

“This award is a shared honor with every department in the District — both for the excellent work that each department does, and the collective effort that went into the creation of our budget book, which is a valuable reference guide and information tool,” said Geoffrey Kiehl, Director of Finance for CVWD.

CVWD has received GFOA awards for the past eight years beginning fiscal year 2012.

To receive the award, CVWD satisfied nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how an entity’s budgets serves as:

  • A policy document
  • A financial plan
  • An operations guide
  • A communications device

Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and in the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.

CVWD’s budget document was praised by one judge who wrote, “Your citizenry and stakeholders should be proud of the job you are doing to provide a level of transparency to those willing to put the time into researching the information contained within the budget document.”

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association with more than 20,000 government finance professionals as members throughout North American, including representatives from CVWD.
