A series of workshops have been scheduled by the California Natural Resources Agency to provide information and solicit input on the state’s Salton Sea Management Program (SSMP).
The Salton Sea is California’s largest lake. Geographically at thirty-five miles long and 15 miles wide, the desert lake extends from the Coachella Valley into the Imperial Valley. Though saltier than the ocean, the Salton Sea supports an abundance of fish, a food source for millions of migratory birds on the Pacific Flyway. Managing the Sea’s natural, agricultural, and municipal water inflows to maximize bird and fish habitat and minimize fine-particle air pollution will allow California to protect regional health, ecological wealth and a stable water supply.
The Salton Sea Management Program is dedicated to preserving clean air, ecosystem wealth and a stable water supply. Established in May 2015 by California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr., the Salton Sea Task Force has been directed to develop a comprehensive management plan for the Sea that will meet a short-term goal of 9,000 acres to 12,000 acres of habitat and dust suppression projects, and set a medium-term plan to construct 18,000 acres to 25,000 acres of habitat and dust suppression projects.
These goals will be implemented through the Salton Sea Management Program, which is committed to a transparent process with clearly defined goals and measurable objectives aligned with available fiscal and hydrological resources. Progress made by the program will be overseen by the State Water Resources Control Board and California Air Resources Board.
The scheduled meetings will introduce the state’s process and the Phase 1 projects currently planned within the SSMP. Meetings are planned as follows:
June 16 in El Centro from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
June 23 in Irvine from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
June 30 in Palm Desert from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
July 7 in Niland from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
July 14 in Calipatria from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
July 21 in Westmorland from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
July 28 in Thermal from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Aug. 2 in Los Angeles from 3 – 5 p.m.
Aug. 11 in North Shore from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Aug. 18 in San Diego from 3 – 5 p.m.
