The Department of Water Resources (DWR) has been directed by the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act to identify best management practices (BMPs) for the sustainable management of ground water (SGM) basins. According to the SGM web site and pursuant to Water Code § 10729(d) DWR must publish on its “Internet Web site” – by Jan. 1, 2017 – best management practices for the sustainable management of groundwater.
In working to meet this January deadline, DWR has established a multi-phased approach for developing BMPs to comply with the requirements of § 10729(d). The multi-phased approach includes the opportunity for interested parties to participate in a BMP survey to help identify BMPs and establish the initial development prioritization.
Practitioners and members of the public can provide direct input regarding the BMPs considered important in their specific basins. The survey requires respondents to share their name and affiliation.
The survey proposes a number of potential items BMPs respondents can rank. Respondents will also be asked if there are additional BMPs that they would like to be addressed. Respondents will receive a confirmation email upon completion of the survey which will contain a copy of their submittal.
Also available online is the Best Management Practices (BMP) Development Framework which outlines DWR’s approach and timeline for development of BMPs. The framework describes how to engage in the development of BMPs and presents the schedule for developing the initial set of BMPs.
