Chino Basin Water Conservation District (CBWCD), along with multiple local water providers, are hosting the 10th Annual Landscape and Water Conservation Festival this coming Saturday, October 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will include free workshops and demonstrations on sustainable landscaping and water wise information. Numerous special activities are available for children.
Four free workshops, held in the CBWCD Board Room, are available for attendees:
“Growing Fruit Trees during Drought”- Tom Spellman from Dave Wilson Nursery
Learn the basics to backyard fruit tree management and maintenance. You can learn how to prolong the harvest of fruit at home! Time: 9–10 am
“The Soil Solution” – The Growing Club
Gardeners around the world know that good soil means healthy plants. But did you know that soil and drought are intimately interconnected? Learn how gardeners and farmers around the world are managing streams, rivers, and groundwater by creating healthy soil and how you can create life-giving (and food-producing) soil in your own home garden. This class will include a hands-on component showing the power of soil. Time: 10-11 am
“Wild Suburbia: Learning to Garden with Native Plants” – Author Barbara Eisenstein
With the book by Barbara Eisenstein, “Wild Suburbia” guides us through the process of transforming a traditional, high water-use yard into a peaceful habitat garden abounding with native plants. Eisenstein emphasizes that gardening is a rewarding activity vs. a finished product, from removing lawns and getting in touch with a yard’s climate to choosing plants and helping them thrive. Time: 11:30 am–12:30 pm
“Butterflies, Birds, and Bees” – Master Gardeners from San Bernardino County
Master Gardeners will teach the best practices to invite birds, beneficial bees, and butterflies into your garden to promote a sustainable and thriving ecosystem in your backyard. Time: 12:30–1:30 pm
Children’s Activities include two featured activities. Joel Harper, author of the children’s book, “All the Way to the Ocean,” will do a book reading and author talk from 11:30AM to 12:30 pm. A live performance of “H2O, Where did You Go?” will be enacted by children’s theater group, Shows that Teach from 10:30-11:00 am and again from 1:00-1:30 pm.
