High school students currently enrolled in grades 9-12, whether in public, private or home-schools, are encouraged to enter the Mojave Water Agency’s (MWA) Student Essay and Video Contest. This is first year a video contest is being added and students are eligible to participate in either or both contests.
The MWA will feature the high school innovators at its 2017 High Desert Water Summit. With a conference focus on future water supplies and future generations, MWA’s current slogan, “Together, we’re securing water for today and tomorrow…” as its theme.
MWA points to the ongoing drought conditions in California and the entire Southwest as the need to stretch our current water supplies. With the California’s growing population careful stewardship of water resources has never been more important.
For these reasons MWA is calling on the next generation to be innovators and to share their ideas with the water agency. All audiences are welcome to attend the 2017 Summit but the focus will be on current high school students for the coming year’s summit. MWA is focusing the summit on those who will “carry the torch” in future generations.
Last year’s recipient of MWA’s Essay Winner, Enrique Arcilla, was honored for his entry, “The Path to Sustainability.” Focused on a water-wise population in 2036 — through efforts begun some 20 years earlier – Arcilla’s essay was accompanied by a slide show featuring a fictional woman, “Jocelyn,” and followed her through a typical day in 2036. The presentation provided both a retrospective look at 2016 and how water-wise efforts were somewhat resisted then but eventually became the mind-set norm in Southern California’s desert.
The 2017 High Desert Water Summit will be held on March 8 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the High Desert Church in Victorville. Contest rules and details are available at www.mojavewater.org
