Rowland Water District awards funds to three schools for creative water education programs

The Rowland Water District (RWD) recently selected three schools as recipients of this year’s EduBucks program for their creativity, dedication and commitment in developing and providing students with a water-based curriculum.

“We have an extremely robust education program here at Rowland Water and the EduBucks award is an added bonus for our educators to get students excited to learn about water,” said Tom Coleman, Rowland Water District General Manager. “We were very excited to have three of the winners assist us in promoting the importance of water.”

Twenty-one applicants sought to receive EduBucks from Rowland Water through its partnership with Water Education/Water Awareness Committee (WEWAC). WEWAC’s goal is to introduce new water-wise habits in local schools. For over 20 years, Rowland Water and WEWAC have awarded up to $600 per applicant to different schools, teachers and organizations. Each of this year’s three local winners have received $600 for use in their classrooms.

The EduBucks program drives teachers to think outside of the box with creative water activities, curriculum and field trips for their classes. The three recipient schools and teachers are from Santana High School, Blandford Elementary School and Jellick Elementary School.

Second grade students from Blandford Elementary School will be utilizing a specialized water workshop to test their knowledge on water while Jellick Elementary 3rd graders will be heading to the UCLA Stunt Ranch to learn about water quality and the water cycle. The Horticulture from Santana High School will be designing a xeriscape garden with a drip irrigation system.

A RWD representative will visit all three classrooms during the month of April to ensure that projects have been completed. Each teacher awarded is also required to submit pictures, a final budget, and a write up of what the students learned to confirm that it aligned with the original scope of the project.
