Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom in search of solution to California drought

To help create innovative solutions to California’s drought and water supply shortage, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom has partnered with Singularity University. The partnership has developed the SU Global Water Impact Challenge, which calls on entrepreneurs around the world to submit technology solutions to address the state’s water supply shortage.

The three winning teams will be selected to be a part of Singularity University’s “Entrepreneurs in Residence” at SU Startup Labs in Silicon Valley. SU Startup Labs is an open innovation campus where large organizations, startups and field impact partners go to accelerate and converge technologies to create sustainable business solutions and tackle the world’s most challenge problems, amongst them: the severe California drought. The three teams will work with SU’s start up community and corporate partners to make their vision a reality.

In addition, three runner-up teams will have the opportunity to pitch their water solution to the SU Startup Labs, a valuable network of tech experts that have the ability to finance projects of their choosing.

“California produces almost half of all the fruits, nuts and vegetables grown in the United States therefore the impact of our solutions are both local, national, and global,” Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “In the spirit of 1919, my goal in working with Singularity University is to activate the incredible talent and ingenuity of Californians and the SU global community to solve twenty-first century challenges with twenty-first century solutions.”

The Impact Challenge is Singularity University’s latest effort to address the critical issues in the local community.

The Impact Challenge is open to teams around the world and will be judged based on:

  • Use of exponential technology
  • Technical feasibility and rigor
  • Innovation
  • Market Viability
  • Scalability and design
  • Utility functionality
