Agency relies on water technology for drought savings

Under Governor Jerry Brown’s mandatory water cutbacks, the Olivenhain Muncipal Water District, located in Encinitas, is required to cut their water usage by 32 percent. To help combat the California drought, OMWD is utilizing Sensus water technology to help customers identify water leaks and periods of high water usage.

“Our customers want to do their part in combating the drought. With the Sensus smart water technology, we are able to provide customers with waeter consumption data in a more granular manner, down to the hour, which can be very helpful in terms of identifying high-usage activities and leaks,” said Joey Randall, customer service manager for OMWD.

Agency officials believe the water technology they use will be vital in reducing their water usage across the board.

“In portions of our district, we can click on a button and receive readings, failure notices, leak detection warnings, and notifications of heavy water use,” Randall explained. “The reliability of the communications system and accuracy of the meters goes a long way to support our water efficiency program.”

In addition to the smart technology, the agency is talking to residents about utilizing recycled water for landscaping and where to cut back their water usage.
