Last week eleven local water districts filed a lawsuit in Orange County Court alleging that PFAS manufacturers, DuPont, 3M, Chemours and Corteva and one consumer product manufacturer, Decra Roofing Systems are responsible for the costs of cleanup and decontamination related to PFAS in the districts’ water.
The carcinogenic chemicals have been detected in county groundwater aquifers and forced the closure of more than three dozen wells in the central and northern parts of the county.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals that includes PFOA, PFOS, GenX, and many other chemicals. PFAS have been manufactured and used in a variety of industries around the globe, including in the United States since the 1940s.
Initial research has shown that PFOA and PFOS can cause certain types of cancer, liver and kidney issues, immunological problems, and reproductive and developmental harm.
This is one of the largest PFAS lawsuit filed to date and for the first time a consumer product manufacture is being targeted for cleanup costs.
