Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) held a celebration earlier this week to commemorate the pending completion of the Thermal Mutual Water Consolidation project, which transitions 38 residential properties from a 50-year-old failing well to the CVWD system.
In a brief ceremony in the neighborhood, Cástulo Estrada, Vice President of the Board of Directors at CVWD, was joined by Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia for the milestone, turning a ceremonial wheel to mark the demolition of the old well and the transfer to the new system.
“We want thank you for joining us today as we celebrate the pending completion of the Thermal Mutual Water project,” Estrada said. “Thanks to a grant we received from the state of California we’ve been able to install about 2,000 feet of 8-inch pipeline on the two main streets into the community.”
The Thermal Mutual project is part of three projects funded by grant money from the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) as part of the Safe and Affordable Funding for Equity and Resiliency (SAFER) Drinking Water Program. The funding also provided improvements at Westside Elementary School and Oasis Garden Mobile Home Park in Thermal.
“As part of our active commitment to connect Eastern Coachella Valley families to more reliable and safe drinking water systems, it is an honor to commemorate the completion of the Coachella Valley Water District’s Thermal Mutual Water Consolidation Project. This is the second of three projects made possible through a $3.3 million State Water Resources Control Board investment we worked collaboratively to secure,” said Assemblymember Garcia, author of SB 200, which established the Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund. “I applaud the tremendous leadership of Board Vice President Castulo Estrada and the district’s Disadvantaged Communities Infrastructure Task Force members. These strong regional partnerships are critical as we move to improve public health and ensure safe and affordable drinking water for all residents.”
A virtual groundbreaking previously was held at Westside School to celebrate the completion of that project.
“The Thermal Mutual project is a great example of a collaborative effort to assist Disadvantaged Communities,” said Estrada, who serves on the CVWD Disadvantaged Communities Infrastructure Committee, which continues to work to find funding to bring affordable drinking water, wastewater and flood control services to more Disadvantaged Communities in the Eastern Coachella Valley. “Thank you, everyone, for being part of this important work to ensure reliable water delivery to this community!
