Western Municipal Water District (WMWD) announced last week that they are one of only seven utilities in the U.S. to receive Platinum level recognition by the Alliance for Water Efficiency (AWE) for their water use efficiency programs.
In a statement released by WMWD, Board President Brenda Dennstedt said, “I am proud to share Western’s recognition as a national leader in water efficiency programs. It is an honor to be acknowledged for our commitment to water use efficiency, along with a steadfast commitment to partnering with customers through support programs and promoting environmental sustainability in the region.”
In 2013 the American Water Works Association adopted the G-480-13 standard to promote water use efficiency through conservation. This standard requires that utilities designate staff for conservation programs; integrate conservation into planning and education programs; implement landscape efficiency and water loss control programs; adopt a water waste ordinance; and use metering and water rates that encourage efficiency.
WMWD’s recognition at the Platinum level represents 100 percent compliance with that standard.
AWE is a national non-profit dedicated to the efficient and sustainable use of water and includes members from local water districts, appliance manufacturers, universities and environmental groups.
