More than 100 houseboats have been removed from Lake Oroville in recent days. The move was necessitated by the extremely low water level of the state’s largest reservoir.
According to officials the boats were flagged for removal because they were moored in shallow water and could be damaged as the water levels go down and underwater islands emerge. Boat owners were told the houseboats would be removed regardless and given the option to haul their own boats home or to pay rent to the state to keep them in the parking lot.
Last time houseboats were removed from Lake Oroville due to low water levels was in 2015.
Forecasted storage for Lake Oroville is expected to drop below the record low of 645 feet set in September of 1977. Lake Oroville is currently at 718 feet above sea level or 38% of capacity according to California Data Exchange Center.
