California drought impacting Christmas trees

The California drought has had an impact on Californians everyday lives. Now, residents will see their Christmas impacted as well. According to the American Christmas Tree Association (ACTA), the severe drought conditions and water restrictions throughout the state will change how Californians celebrate Christmas.

Based on a study conducted by Nielsen, on behalf of ACTA, people are changing how they use Christmas trees. Here’s what the study found:

  • Nine percent will have no Christmas tree this year.
  • Four percent will reduce the number of live trees they use, but will still have one.
  • 18 percent will display an artificial tree due to the California drought.

“Clearly, the drought is changing the holiday behaviors of many in California,” said Jami Warner, Executive Director of ACTA, said in a release. “While we believe there will be a sufficient supply of real trees available this season, they do require at least a gallon of water per day to keep from drying out and becoming a fire hazard. With harsh watering restrictions being mandated across the state, a gallon of water per day becomes significant, especially since Christmas trees are typically displayed for 36 days between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.”
