The Bureau of Reclamation has awarded Western Municipal Water District (WMWD) $70,000 to implement the first phase of critical improvements identified in Western’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Master Plan. The funding is part of Reclamation’s WaterSMART Small-Scale Water Efficiency Projects program.
Western’s SCADA program allows the agency to monitor and control its water service delivery system through real-time viewing of facility operations.
“This project will help optimize water deliveries for our customers by increasing the overall reliability of the system,” stated General Manager Craig Miller in a statement. “As we enter into periods of prolonged drought, ensuring the efficiency of our current system will help sustain our water supplies for the future.”
WMWD will use the grant funding to install a Wide Area Network (WAN) infrastructure on reservoirs in its Riverside service area. The reservoirs are part of the existing SCADA system and represent 60 percent of the area’s drinking water needs.
“This project represents Western’s ongoing commitment to enhance security systems so that our systems can safely and reliably deliver the highest quality water and wastewater services on-demand, 24/7/365,” continued Miller.
Construction is expected to begin in March 2022 and anticipated to be completed in fall 2023.
