Preparing for El Nino’s potential for frozen pipes

California is expected to see an active El Nino season that will bring freezing temperatures, torrential rains and even snow. As the cold front moves into California, it’s important to make winter changes to preserve your home:

  • Keep your heater on 65 degrees throughout the winter. If you get warm, put it on auto and it will run only when it gets below 65.
  • Allow each of your faucets to trickle throughout the night. The small amount of water will keep your pipes from freezing. Because it’s a minimal amount of water, you won’t see an increase on your water bill.
  • If you have exposed pipes outside your home, wrap them with insulation or tracing wire. The added insulation will keep your pipes from being exposed to cold climates.
  • Repair drafty windows and doors.Doing this before El Nino hits your area is vital. New windows and doors can prevent flooding and water damage to your home.

If your pipes freeze, here’s what you should do:

  • Turn off your water. Before you try to unfreeze your pipes, make sure your water is turned off completely. Trying to thaw your pipes while the water is on can cause small cracks.
  • Use a heat to thaw your pipes. When thawing your pipes, you can use a blow dryer, small space heater or hot water. Once your pipe is thawed, turn your water on slowly to check for leaks and cracks.
