The drought in California has had a severe impact, both throughout the state and around the country. Filmmaker Conrad Weaver and his team decided it was important for the world to see how the drought has impacted people’s day-to-day lives. At that point, the concept of Thirsty Land the movie was created.
“Thirsty Land is a documentary film that tells the story about extreme drought and the water crisis in the western United States and how these challenges impact farmers, urban communities, and the environment and our food supply,” Weaver, who produced and directed the movie, told California Water News Daily. “We’ll explore the battle between urban communities and farmers, and environmental groups who are all needing use of water.”
Weaver and his team present various point of views. They provide an in-depth look at the California droughtfrom different stakeholders. Drought experts from the University of Nebraska and other universities discuss water management, drought preparedness and water issues. Farmers and ranchers who were directly impacted by the California drought describe their struggles with managing water resources and food supply demands. City and state officials discuss their proposed solutions to manage water resources in both the short and long term. In addition, the documentary provides a glimpse into the lives of an average family in the Central Valley whose wells have gone dry.
The film will tell the story about the drought, but it’s not all doom and gloom; we’ll also feature people, companies, and communities who are working on amazing solutions to conserve water,” Weaver explains. “We’ve interviewed farmers and others in agriculture who’ve developed new technology to measure and control the water they use, so that every drop counts. Our global food supply depends on this.”
Thirsty Land is currently in the final editing stages, after being shot over the past 10 months. The documentary will debut at the Daugherty Water for Food Institute Water Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska on April 24th. The film is scheduled for a national release in late May.
