East Bay Municipal Utility District water shaming customers

East Bay Municipal Utility District has high water wasters throughout their district, who consume more than 900 gallons a day. To help meet their water reduction goals set by Governor Jerry Brown, EBMUD has begun sending warning letters to those water wasters. If the water wasters continue using more than 900 gallons a day, EBMUD says it may be forced to release the names and addresses of those customers who are using the most water.

EBMUD has sent out more than 5,000 letters to residential customers telling them they are using far more water than they should be. The new water threshold, set at 984 gallons per household per day, will kick into effect on July 1. Some households, however, are using as much as 3,000 gallons per day.

“Usually that level of water indicates one that you have a leak or that you’re really just watering too much, over watering,” EBMUD spokesperson Abby Figueroa told ABC 7 News.

According to the water district, 25 percent of the warning letters were sent to customers in Danville. Almo, Lafayette and Orinda had high volumes of water wasters as well.
