CSU-Community College partnership trains future water leaders

Headquartered at the Cal State San Bernardino, the Water Resources Institute (WRI) works to place disadvantaged students in internships that could potentially lead to a job in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program is a collaborative partnership between the USDA and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).

Each year, the program offers 50 paid water resources internships to students who are interested in learning about the field of water resources and/or watershed management. To ensure students are being prepared for agricultural-related careers, activities are performed and carried out by the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and the Forest Service (FS).

According to WRI, “the strategic goal of this project is to measurable increase student research skills that ensure our national forests and private working lands are conserved, restored, and made more resilient to climate change, while simultaneously enhancing the sustainability of the nation’s water resources.”

Full-time Cal State University and Community College students are eligible for the program.

The program recently received a $2 million extension over the next four years.

Students who are interested in applying for internships should visit the WRI website here.
