Eleven projects funded by Prop 1 water funds for disadvantaged Trinity County communities

The State Water Resources Control Board, in conjunction with the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board, recently approved the funding of 11 projects in the North Coast region including more than $15 million for the consolidation of three wastewater collection and treatment systems in the Trinity County community of Lewiston. The projects are all funded by Proposition 1 funds, the $7.5 billion bond measure.

The $15,560,300 Lewiston project will combine the wastewater systems of the Lewiston Park Mutual Water Company and the Trinity Dam Mobile Home Park with the Lewiston Community Services District. The existing systems present numerous issues including sewer overflow from collection systems that are more than 50 years old. The Proposition 1 funds will allow the community to address numerous health, safety and environmental violations within the three small, severely disadvantaged communities.

“We have been working on the Lewiston consolidation project for more than 20 years,” said North Coast Water Board Executive Officer Matthias St. John. “It has been a long-term goal of the Regional Board to see the consolidation project funded, and we’re glad to see this project now has the financial backing to move forward. The consolidation of these wastewater systems will open the door to the consolidation of those communities’ struggling drinking water systems.”

Two other North Coast major wastewater collection projects — Willow Creek Downtown Wastewater Development and Private Septic Decommissioning project – received $5.3 million of Proposition 1 funds in August. The projects are being co-funded by the State Water Board and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to replace septic systems that have started to fail. Lewiston is located on a terrace above the Trinity River and is a National Wild and Scenic Rivers System designated tributary of the Klamath River.

In addition to the funding of the Willow Creek and Lewiston projects, the most recent Proposition 1 fund allocations of $3,955,900 in Siskiyou, Humboldt, Del Norte and Mendocino counties include:

  • Willow Creek CSD, Downtown Wastewater Development Project $4,800,000
  • Anderson Valley Community Services District, Boonville Wastewater System $500,000
  • City of Fortuna, WWTP Treatment and Disposal System Upgrade $500,000
  • Humboldt County, Samoa Peninsula Wastewater $500,000

  • Willow Creek CSD, Private Septic Decommissioning and Lateral Installation Project $500,000

Total Proposition 1 construction projects for the North Coast Region now total 20,860,300. Combined with the August allocations, the total Proposition 1 Small Community Grant funding for the North Coast Region is almost $25 million.
