The Madera Irrigation District (MID) has recently earned the “District of Distinction” accreditation from the California Special District Leadership Foundation (SDLF). The award recognizes MID for its achievements in the areas of governance, transparency, finances, and board conduct. MID is one of 33 special districts to receive this distinction of some 2,100 special districts in the state.
The District of Distinction accreditation is among California’s highest government honors. To receive the accreditation, a special district must demonstrate properly conducting open and public meetings, completion of essential governance transparency requirements including conducting ethics and harassment training for all board members, and filing financial transactions and compensation reports to the State Controller in a timely manner.
“Madera Irrigation District is proud to receive this highly prestigious recognition by SDLF,” said General Manager Thomas Greci. “It is a testament to the emphasis placed on good governance by the District’s board of directors and staff in recent years.”
According to SDLF the accreditation is designed as a way for districts to highlight their prudent fiscal practices along with other areas important to effectively operate and govern a special district. It has become increasingly important to demonstrate to constituents that districts have sound fiscal management policies and practices in place among other areas of importance in district operations, claims SDLF.
MID was also acknowledged by California State Assemblymen Frank Bigelow (R-5th Assembly District – Madera) who presented a State Assembly Resolution for MID in honor of receiving the District of Distinction accreditation. Assemblyman Bigelow was on-hand to personally resent the resolution to MID board members.
