Santa Fe Irrigation District suspends water fines

When Governor Jerry Brown announced his mandatory water cutbacks across the state, Santa Fe Irrigation District restricted the amount of water each person was allowed to use. The strictest aspect of water allocation program had to do with outdoor water irrigation. Residents had to cut outdoor water use by 45 percent. If residents failed to follow the strict guidelines, they would see fines.

Because the water agency has recently installed a desalination plant, Santa Fe Irrigation District’s board of directors has decided to halt all water fines.

Based on the newly operational desalination plant, district officials believe their water reduction rate will drop from 35 percent to 28.

Although penalties are being halted, some actions, like car washing, are still prohibited. Outdoor irrigation is limited to twice a week, for less than 10 minutes at a time.
