Water & Environment Federation presents technology award to disposable wipes grinder company

A bane for many years for wastewater professionals have been the not-so-disposable, disposable wipes products. These modern conveniences have been a scourge for wastewater agencies as their operators have been forced to spend hours unclogging and rebuilding wipes-plagued pumps that would break down, only to have the problem repeat itself in just a few weeks or even days.

Santa Ana-based JWC Environmental was recently awarded the prestigious Innovative Technology Award by the Water and Environment Federation (WEF) for its Wipes Ready Technologies. The advanced sewage grinder technology, available only on JWC’s Muffin Monster and Channel Monster products, is aiding wastewater professionals in tackling the issues caused by disposable wipes products.

JWC Environmental undertook the challenge of eliminating wipes-related sewage pump clogs in 2013; in 2014, the company released its Wipes Ready Technologies. The technology’s ability to cut wipes in a way that keeps them from forming pump-killing rag balls have yielded superb results.

“Our customers were asking us for a solution to wipes related pump clogs and we listened to their needs,” said Rob Sabol, Director of R&D for JWC Environmental. “Through extensive testing and field trials by our development team, I am proud to say that we can now provide technologies that fix one of the biggest operational issues in wastewater today. Even better though is the sincere thanks we are getting from our customers.”

JWC Environmental has reported that utilities that previously reported pump systems with up to weekly clogs have not fouled in nearly two years. A secondary benefit reported by some pump operators are lower pumping-related energy costs due to pumps working more efficiently as a result of staying free of wipes-related debris.

The award for its Wipes Ready Technologies represents the fifth WEF Innovative Technology honor JWC Environmental has received from WEF. Previously awarded technologies have included JWC’s Screenings Washer Monster, Auger Monster, and the Honey Monster® Septage Receiving system. The Wipes Ready Technologies and JWC Environmental’s other municipal and industrial wastewater solutions can be seen at the Water Environment Federation’s Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC) 2017 in Chicago on October 2-4.
