Residents in the wealthy neighborhood of North Tustin Hills are facing new water restrictions after failing to meet their mandatory water reduction rate. Residents missed the mark by almost six percent.
As a means of reaching Governor Jerry Brown’s mandatory water cutbacks, the Golden State Water District, a private water agency, is limiting the number of days residents are allowed to water their lawns. Previously, residents were allowed to water their yards twice a week. Beginning December 15th, they will only be able to water once a week.
Although North Tustin Hills has conserved, they are a bit shy of their 36 percent conservation goal.
“Customers were doing a good job reducing water use during the summer months through September,” Ken Vecchiarelli, general manager of the local Golden State Water District, told the Orange County Register. “However, local conservation slipped during the month of October, and the system is in jeopardy of falling below its cumulative reduction target assigned by the State Water Resources Control Board.”
If residents fail to meet the state’s conservation goal, the district will see hefty fines, which will ultimately be passed on to customers.
