The Imperial Irrigation District (IID) recently announced it’s providing grant funds to cities and communities in the Imperial Valley in support of keeping pools open and/or providing other safe water activities.
Grants ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 each were awarded during the IID Board of Director’s meeting of June 21 to the cities of Brawley, El Centro, Holtville, Imperial and Westmorland. Grants were also provided to the Calexico Unified School District, Niland Chamber of Commerce and Heber Public Utility District.
Grants to two other local entities are pending.
“We are excited these grant funds will help make it possible to provide beneficial, safe water activities for youth during the summer,” said Susie Carrillo, IID’s Water Safety Program coordinator. “We are very appreciative of the efforts and commitment being taken by each community to promote water safety for not only our youth, but also adults.”
The funding, collectively up to $41,000, comes through the district’s Water Safety Program, which, since 1959, has reinforced the life-saving message to stay away from canals. The program’s popular mascot, Dippy Duck, has led the charge for the past 56 years, sharing his three main rules:
- Do not swim in canals
- Do not ride, walk or play near canals
- Do not jump into canals
