Cal Water has begun work on a water infrastructure upgrade that will improve water supply reliability and fire protection in North Central Chico. The project, which will include installation of about 6,000 feet of new 8-inch water main along East Avenue, will be completed ahead of the City of Chico Road Rehabilitation Project to lessen the road impacts and overall costs for both projects.
Installation will take place in two phases. The first phase will be on East Avenue, between Cohasset Road and Tom Polk Avenue. The second phase will be on East Avenue, between Esplanade and Connors Avenue. Construction will take about six to eight weeks for each phase. In addition to the new main line, 10 fire hydrants and 67 service connections are being replaced.
“Infrastructure improvements like this ensure Cal Water maintains a reliable water supply for both everyday and emergency needs, while also preventing water loss from aging pipes and creating cost savings by coordinating our work with the upcoming City of Chico road rehabilitation,” said Evan Markey, Cal Water Chico District Manager.
The majority of the work will be performed Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.; however, some work may be performed at night or during the weekends to help alleviate traffic issues.
Temporary asphalt will be applied until permanent paving is completed. The City of Chico will perform the permanent paving as part of its Rehabilitation Project, which it anticipates beginning in June.
