Because of Governor Jerry Brown’s mandatory water restrictions, the City of Redding was told it needed to cut back their water usage by 36 percent. So far, residents have made significant changes, especially in outdoor irrigation, to the point where water consumption has dropped by 30 percent.
While city officials are happy about the progress Redding residents have made, they are worried about the additional six percent they need to reach. Beginning July 15, a private security firm will start enforcing water restrictions.
Up until this point, the City was only responding to formal complaints. They would send the resident or business warning notices, certified letters and penalties. The downside to relying on this system: many violations continue to occur but they are going undetected.
The private security firm will be on the look out for gross violations. “Gross violations include watering on the wrong day for the address, watering at the wrong time, anyone watering on Monday, over watering to the point of runoff, and poorly aimed sprinklers. Observers will provide a report of violations at the end of each review and City staff with follow up on the information,” according to KRCTV.
Even numbered addresses are allowed to water on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Odd number houses are allowed to water on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Watering times are from 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. No one is allowed to water on Mondays and overwatering is prohibited.
