California drought efforts take hold in other states

On Tuesday, Oregon Governor Kate Brown declared a drought emergency in 23 of the state’s 26 counties. Governor Brown issued an executive order for the state to cut water usage by 15 percent by the end of 2020.

Beginning on November 1st of this year, each Oregon water agency will be required to self-report water cutbacks on a yearly basis.

“Water is the foundation of our economies, communities, ecosystems, and quality of life,” Governor Brown said in a statement. “State government’s efforts to address climate change must include reduced consumption and other conservation measures as water shortages become the new normal.”

Governor Kate Brown cites the severe drought the west coast is facing as the reason behind her executive order. California Governor Jerry Brown issued a drought emergency back in April. Washington Governor Jay Inslee followed Governor Jerry Brown’s lead and issued drought emergency for Washington in May.

“Today we are standing on dry grass where there should be five feet of snow. This historic drought demands unprecedented action,” California Governor Jerry Brown said back in April, when he used executive action to address the California drought. “Therefore, I’m issuing an executive order mandating substantial water reductions across our state. As Californians, we must pull together and save water in every possible way.”

Under Governor Jerry Brown’s mandate, Californians are to curb water usage by as much as 36 percent. Some cities and agencies have surpassed that goal.
