Names of water wasters released to public

On Thursday, East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD) released a list of excessive water wasters.

Here’s how they stacked up:

  • George Kirkland, former Chevron vice president, uses 12,600 gallons of water per day.
  • Mark Pine, venture capital executive, uses 8,000 gallons of water per day.
  • Billy Beane, Oakland A’s executive vice president uses 5,900 gallons of water per day.

Kirkland, the largest water user in the district, said his high water bill was due to an undetected leak.

“I didn’t realize I had a leak until I got the water bill,” Kirkland told San Jose Mercury News. “Drip irrigation doesn’t help if you have a leak you didn’t know about.”

EBMUD customers are allotted 1,000 gallons of water per day under a local drought ordinance.

The water district cited a state law that requires the disclosure of information about customers who fail to follow district rules and policies as their reason for releasing the names.

According to Abby Figueroa, EBMUD spokeswoman, the agency mailed out written notices in late spring to warn customers who were going over the 1,000-gallon per day limit that they would be penalized.
