VA Fails Cut Back on California Water Supply

VA Medical Center fails to follow water cutbacks

Drought shaming is no longer just for private residences. CBS Los Angeles recently went undercover and found that the Veterans Affairs West Los Angeles Medical Center was violating the City’s Emergency Water Conservation Plan.

Because of the California drought, City officials limited how often and when lawns are allowed to be watered. Los Angeles residents and businesses are not allowed to water between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Medical Center was caught red-handed watering the lawn from 8:41 a.m. until 10:44 a.m. According to the CBS Los Angeles report, the type of sprinkler installed at the facility should only be run for eight minutes on days that watering is allowed.

Investigative reporter David Goldstein reported a muddy lawn, to the point where he had to put boots on to walk across it. According to the report, CBS Los Angeles could the same facility watering the same section of lawn in October, for six hours.

The VA facility in Loma Linda isn’t without its problems too. A video shot on May 26 shows a broken sprinkler shooting water straight in the air. A problem that remained for weeks.

Linda Satele of the VA Public Affairs Office claims that the VA is responsible for following Governor Jerry Brown’s mandatory cutbacks in response to the California drought. She claims the West LA facility has cut back water usage by 35 percent.
