Feds open Delta Cross Channel gates for summer

The Bureau of Reclamation opened the Delta Cross Channel gates last Friday for the summer season, allowing boat traffic to pass.

The Delta Cross Channel Gates control the diversion of freshwater water from the Sacramento River into the Delta through Snodgrass Slough and into the Mokelumne River.

The opening of the gates allows water to move to the headworks of the Central Valley Project’s Delta-Mendota and Contra Costa canals, as well as the State Water Project’s California Aqueduct, according to the bureau.

Boaters are advised to check the status of the gates as Reclamation closes the Delta Cross Channel Gates during high flow periods on the Sacramento River to prevent flood conditions in the San Joaquin section of the Delta and to protect migrating salmon.

The closing and opening of the gates take about one hour. Updates on gate openings and closures are available at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/cvo/vungvari/dcc_chng.pdf.
